Aga Tips: The Melted Aga Badge

Aga Tips: The Melted Aga Badge

The photo above shows the badge on the front of my beloved Aga. It’s a shiny brand new badge because the old one melted. Having owned an Aga for eleven years, a few months ago I had the brainwave of purchasing some hooks for the Aga rail from which I could hang oven gloves and towels. What I did not realise is that if you hang things in the middle of the rail in front of the badge, it will get hot and melt onto the glove or towel, as you can see here:

I contacted Aga who told me that owners are warned about this upon purchasing their new oven. I have no reason to doubt this but as a conscientious reader of instruction books I was surprised that I seemed to have forgotten about this particular tip. Anyway, it’s too late now. I had to accept that a gauntlet I’d hung from one of my lovely new hooks had melted into the badge, ruining both.

I’m telling you this as a warning so that you don’t make the same mistake. I have now moved the hooks to each end of the rail like so:

I can’t think why I didn’t think to do it this way from the outset because it looks better.

By the way, I bought the hooks at our local Kitchens Cookshop. It’s the only place I’ve managed to find some with a wide enough gauge to fit the Aga rail.

  1. We have had our aga for nearly 40 years, we have never had a problem. The issue is inferior quality badges. Phone aga and explain there are many instances of this happening and its a manufacturing fault. Do not take anything less than a replacement. Its their fault not yours

    • I did try but as you can see above they told me that owners are warned about this problem. Maybe I should have pushed harder but it was a few years ago now and I think I’ll leave things as they are.

  2. They’re reminding you it was in the manual. Was it? Have you checked? If it was word of mouth that’s not good enough. My towels are frequently hanging in the middle and this makes the doors a bit hot to touch but no damage has been incurred in over 20years.

    • I didn’t mention the manual and to be honest, can’t remember specifically where the warning is supposed to be. The Aga Book by Mary Berry, which was delivered with my Aga, simply says in a paragraph about drying and smoothing laundry, that sheets can be hung over the hand rail “on the right hand side”. You have been lucky and I was not, so I have avoided hanging things over the middle section ever since.

      • I’m getting the sense that you are predisposed to accept responsibility and apologise over small controversies, endearing characteristics in a social situation but doomed to fail in the world of business.

  3. Im with Rosemary on this one. They shouldn’t make a badge out of material that melts. That’s what the rail is there for- to hang things on it.

    • The badge doesn’t melt if you don’t hang things in front of it. And one is warned against hanging anything on the hand rail that might obstruct the burner door, which on my Aga is immediately below the badge.

  4. I’ve just come across ‘Around the Aga’ and read with interest the comments about the melting Aga badge. I own a 4 oven gas Aga that is almost 40 years old. About 15 years ago, I changed the original badge for the oval script badge, which was a genuine Aga part. Last year the paint on the badge started to melt and run. I would like to add that I have never hung anything over the centre of the Aga covering the badge, ( I only hang a tea towel over the rail on the left hand side where the simmering/plate warming ovens are)so why this suddenly started to happen is a mystery. The good thing is that I contacted Aga customer services, and I received a new replacement badge within a couple of days.
